Icers advance to ACHA Quarterfinals

The No. 2-seeded Penn State Icers advanced to the ACHA Quarterfinals with a 7-3 win over No. 15-seed SUNY-Canton Saturday in Bensenville, Ill.

Penn State (32-4-1) was in danger of possibly being upset early on as the Kangaroos (19-12) were tied with the Icers after one period and took a 3-2 lead in the second period. But the Icers responded with three unanswered goals in the period, including two in a span of 34 seconds from Ryan Paradis and Nick Servalli that turned a one-goal deficit into a one-goal lead and put Penn State ahead for good.

Team grows playoff beards to show unity

Tim O'Brien owned up to it.

After practice Tuesday, he admitted he probably has the worst playoff beard on the Penn State Icers.

"I'll take the cake for the worst beard," O'Brien said. "It's not even a beard. I had a two-week jump, I think, on these guys, and [John] Conte's five-o-clock shadow is better than my three-week beard."

O'Brien doesn't have a beard as much as he has faded playoff sideburns, but he's trying to join the beard movement, which the players say is a sign of team unity heading into nationals this weekend.

"It's a very close team, and that's something that you can't coach or can't recruit," Penn State coach Scott Balboni said. "It's a nice situation to be able to have that. They'll go to war and go to bat for each other, and that goes a long way."

In preparation for the ACHA national tournament, the team decided a couple weeks ago to engage in the popular postseason hockey tradition. The team also decided not to get haircuts.

It became so popular that the coaches decided to join in and are also growing beards.

Goalie closing in on single-season wins record

Four wins separate the No. 2 Penn State Icers from a national title.

But those four wins could mean something even more for Penn State netminder Teddy Hume.

With 25 wins so far this season, Hume sits just three behind former Icers goalie John Gray for most wins by a Penn State goalie in a single season.

Gray recorded 28 wins in the 1992-93 season, during which the Icers went 33-1-0, but lost in the national championship game.

Icers offense rolling into nationals

Throughout February, a couple sounds became common at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion.

The sound of a shot. The horn. The roar of the Penn State Icers as they celebrated yet another goal.

Penn State went 7-1 last month, scoring 46 goals in that span. In all seven wins, the Icers scored no fewer than five goals. The only game in which Penn State failed to reach that mark was a 4-3 loss at the hands of Rhode Island.

Since that game, the Icers mostly won on the back of their offense, which is peaking as Penn State heads to nationals.

Clark comes back after back injury

At this time last year, it was unclear if Alan Clark would ever walk again.

But this past Friday, Clark walked into the Greenberg Ice Pavilion -- and then skated onto the ice and played against the Robert Morris Colonials.

Clark was walking near University Drive on Feb. 10, 2009 when he slipped and fell on his tailbone, shattering one of the vertebras in his back.

Hume not shaking struggles since return from sickness

Perhaps nothing summed up the last two weekends for Teddy Hume more than when a Robert Morris player barreled into him Saturday.

Hume was sent into the net and directly into the crossbar, which knocked the cage off the moorings. He skated away from the net, but the collision serves as an analogy for Hume's recent bad luck in net since the Penn State Icers goalie returned from the flu.

Icers' regular season ends with rough play

This wasn't exactly the end to the season Scott Balboni had in mind.

Throughout Sunday's game against Robert Morris (Pa.), the action was mired in stoppages and numerous whistles, bringing the game to a screeching halt.

Despite those stoppages, the Penn State Icers defeated the Colonials 7-5 in a weekend sweep.

Icers take penalties, avoid suspensions

In Friday night's game, Penn State Icers freshman Dominic Morrone was pinned against the board after a play as a Robert Morris player took a swing at him.

In Saturday's game, a Robert Morris skater jumped on junior Taylor Cera, pushing his head into the ice.

And there was nothing the Icers could do about it.

Icers finish regular season with heated win

It wasn't the prettiest end to the regular season when the Penn State Icers defeated Robert Morris (Pa.) 7-5 at the Greenberg Ice Pavillion Saturday afternoon.

While forward Tim O'Brien notched a hat trick, the game was marred by several ugly scraps and multiple ejections. Icers forwards Chris Pronchik and Ryan Paradis were both ejected in the game.

The ejections were ruled as misconducts, not disqualifications, and the pair will be available for the start of nationals next week.

Another hat trick leads to Icers victory

He's scored seven goals in the last two games, but that doesn't mean Chris Cerutti's teammates are patting him on the back and telling him how well he's playing.

As Cerutti scored the team's last three goals in the Icers' 6-3 win Friday over Robert Morris for his second-straight hat trick, his teammates responded by making jokes and poking fun at him.

After scoring his second goal, Cerutti said his teammates offered plenty of explanations for his recent success, including "even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in awhile."

Last home weekend for Downey

While most of his players have hit the showers and the zamboni is waiting to clean up the ice shavings from practice, Bill Downey is usually still out there.

Downey, often wearing his Montreal Canadiens retro cap, fires wrist shot after wrist shot. Some hit the net, some hit the post. Others bang off the boards or clink off of the glass. But he's out there.

But the Icers' assistant coach doesn't have many more post-practice skates left at Greenberg. He's leaving the team after this season to be with his wife, who took a job in Boston.

Icers fixing turnover issues for nationals

All weekend long, things were just a little bit off.

Players held on to the puck a second too long, passes were forced into spaces where they didn't belong and the Penn State Icers found the puck heading back in their direction time and time again.

Turnovers were a major story for Penn State in its action at the ESCHL playoffs this past weekend, leading to easier goals allowed. Eliminating those errors is something the Icers will be focused on heading into nationals in two weeks.

Icers look to change luck by handling trophy

The biggest step toward winning a national championship so far this season might have come at last weekend's ESCHL playoffs -- but it was after all the games had been played.

When the No. 2 Penn State Icers were presented with the ESCHL playoff championship trophy during a postgame ceremony, captain John Conte didn't hesitate to pick up the trophy and carry it back to show off to his teammates.

This might not seem like a big deal at first, but flashback to last year.

Roster still not set for last home weekend

For the Penn State Icers, the ACHA regular season officially comes to a close this weekend.

With national seeds already decided and matchups already set, from an implication standpoint this weekend is little more than a chance for the Icers to improve their win total.

But as the Icers prepare for the ACHA national tournament, this weekend could also be a chance for Coach Scott Balboni's team to get healthy and get some of its injured players back in the lineup.

After the Penn State Icers won the ESCHL Championship Sunday, forward Chris Cerutti said he can't remember a game where he scored four-straight goals against such tough competition.

Cerutti's four-goal outburst in the second period helped the Icers win the ESCHL Tournament for the third-straight year and earned him the tournament MVP.

But a big part of Cerutti's success is thanks to the Icers' power play, which awoke in the second period Sunday and ignited the Icers' offense.

The Penn State Icers beat Rhode Island 7-5 Sunday to win the ESCHL Championship.

The Icers (29-4-1) won on the strength of a five-goal second period. Forward Chris Cerutti scored four consecutive goals for Penn State, which erased an 2-1 Rams (21-10-3) deficit after the first

period. Tim O'Brien scored twice for the Icers, who also got an early goal from Steve Thurston.

Teddy Hume allowed five goals, including two in the third period, but still got the win. Hume was also one of three Icers named to the ESCHL First Team All-League.

Icers prepared for do-or-die in tournament

Tim O'Brien doesn't get nervous.

Before a big game, the forward doesn't feel butterflies in his stomach or experience any jitters. O'Brien just focuses on the game and only the game as everything around him fades away.

That style of preparation has helped the junior become more prepared to step out onto the ice for a do-or-die game. Once again, O'Brien will find himself going through those emotions as the Penn State Icers take part in the ESCHL playoffs this weekend.

Penn State enters as the top overall seed, giving it a bye from Friday's action, and will face the winner of West Chester and Drexel on Saturday afternoon.

ACHA tournament has wrong teams

The ACHA tournament decides the national champion from a group of 16 teams --unfortunately, it's not the nation's best 16.

But with the final rankings, which determined the tournament field released Wednesday, many teams that should have been locks for the tournament will find themselves cleaning out their lockers when other teams are lacing up the skates for nationals.

The tournament field is supposed to be made up of the top-16 ranked teams in the final coaches poll of the season, but with automatic bids handed out to each of the six conference champions and the tournament's host team, that plan has not worked out so well this season.

Icers' playoff opener set for SUNY-Canton

After clinching the ESCHL title last weekend, the No. 2 Penn State Icers knew they would be playing in the ACHA national tournament. Now they know exactly who and when they will be playing.

The Icers kept their No. 2 ranking in the final poll of the season and will take on the No. 15 seed SUNY-Canton Kangaroos, who are making their first ACHA Division I tournament appearance, at 1 p.m. March 6 at the Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville, Ill.

Despite finishing at No. 22 in the final rankings, the Kangaroos received an automatic bid to the field of 16 after winning the ECHL regular season title.

Line changes bring success

Each forward line on the Penn State Icers is named by the color of jersey it wears during practice.

One of those is the Gold Line, which in classic hockey terms would probably be considered the fourth line.

But on Penn State, there isn't really a fourth line, at least not considering the way the Icers' Gold Line played last weekend.

Last Saturday, the Gold Line was made up of Joe Zitarelli, Mike Longo and Mike Broccolo. Zitarelli scored the first goal of the game and set the tone for the rest of the afternoon.

The performance against Drexel came after Penn State coach Scott Balboni changed his lines around numerous times during this season. But one thing he has been committed to doing is rolling four forward lines when possible, something that has been successful for him.

Special teams try to save legs

When Paul Daley woke up Sunday morning, things didn't feel right.

The common bumps and bruises ached more than they used to. Each step was a little more labored and taken a bit more gingerly than expected.

While things may not have felt right, Daley knew why he was experiencing such added discomfort.

With the Penn State Icers and Drexel taking 25 combined penalties last Saturday, the members of their power play and penalty kill unit are bearing the full brunt of the extra strain.

Penn State special teams players serve on both units, something that isn't done every year but seemed to suit this year's team.

In a season of firsts for Teddy Hume, the No. 2 Penn State Icers hope he can do one more thing he's never done before -- win four games in five days.

Hume has already notched his first 20-win season, his first career assist and even recorded his first penalty minutes as an Icer.

But the national tournament, which starts March 8, is different from anything the Icers have done this season. The champion will have won four games in five days.

Icers clinch league title

When the clock ticked down on the No. 2 Penn State Icers' 5-1 win against Drexel Saturday, there was no pomp and circumstance.

It was just the normal postgame hockey celebration, followed by the postgame handshake and the Icers raising their sticks to the crowd to salute their fans.

In the grand scheme of the Icers' season, Saturday's game was not as big as Friday night's tilt in Philadelphia -- the 8-4 win at Drexel that clinched Penn State's third-consecutive ESCHL title.

Dan Ivanir found himself with a unique viewpoint of the Greenberg Ice Pavilion Saturday night.

Midway through the third period, Ivanir made a save on a Drexel shot, causing a whistle. Not long after, the goalie was struck by Dragons' forward Tom Buklarewicz.

Ivanir was knocked backward, falling onto his back, staring up at the rafters as his teammates rushed in to defend him, causing a scrum in front of the net.

In the third period of Saturday's game against Rhode Island, defenseman Steve Thurston reared back and fired the puck from the blue line.

The puck sailed through the air before making a sickening thud and ricocheting away. Left in its wake was forward Tim O'Brien, laying face down on the ice and writhing in pain.

Icers look to improve on second periods

It's only a few feet that separate one bench from the other in a hockey rink.

But that small distance can seem pretty long at the end of a shift, and it can seem especially long during the second period, when each team has to cross the red line to make the "long change."

The long change and the second period in general have been problematic for the Icers this season, and it's something they hope doesn't come back to bite them this weekend against Drexel.

PSU ready for nationals

The last four weeks were no fluke.

When Penn State Icers' coach Scott Balboni sat down to draw up their schedule, there was a reason he lined up Ohio, West Chester, Delaware and Rhode Island all in a row down the home stretch.

He wanted his team to be ready for nationals. Now that Penn State has gone through its toughest stretch of the season with a 6-2 record, the Icers believe they are rounding into shape for the most important part of the season.

Icers split weekend contests with Rhode Island

Midway through the second period, the Penn State Icers found themselves down two men as Rhode Island went on the power play.

One minute and 53 seconds later, the threat had passed and Penn State had the momentum.

That momentum carried the Icers as they scored the next three goals and cruised to a 5-1 win over the Rams and a split of the series.

For Penn State, which had struggled on the penalty kill all weekend, giving up three goals in those situations through both games, the sequence was a turning point.

Penn State defeated Rhode Island 5-1 Saturday night, pulling the Icers within a point of the Rams in the ESCHL standings. Rhode Island has completed its league schedule while Penn State takes on Drexel next weekend, just needing a point to clinch the league title.

The Icers were powered by two goals a piece from forwards Chris Cerutti and Nick Seravalli as Penn State scored the last four goals of the game.

LINDENWOOD RETAINS THE #1 SPOT

UNION LAKE, MI - The defending ACHA Men's Division 1 National Champions, Lindenwood University retained its grip on the #1 spot in Ranking #8, garnering 35 out of 37 first-place votes. Penn State received the other 2 first-place votes and remained in the #2 spot. Also unchanged were #3 Ohio and #4 Illinois, while Iowa State moved up a spot and rounded out the top 5.

The State University of New York at Canton clinched the third spot at this year’s National Tournament by winning the Regular-Season Championship of the Eastern Collegiate Hockey League (ECHL). The Kangaroos were also the big mover and shaker in the polls, leaping into the top 25 and settling in at #23. They join Stony Brook [Regular-Season Champions of the Eastern Collegiate Hockey Association (ECHA)] and host Robert Morris University Illinois, leaving 13 other spots open for the tournament.

Bad period ends Icers' 19-game winning streak

It took more than three months and 19 games to build and only one period to lose. The No. 2 Penn State Icers had their 19-game ACHA winning streak snapped Saturday in a 4-2 loss to Delaware.

Despite being tied 1-1 after the opening period, the Fightin' Blue Hens dominated the second period, outscoring the Icers 3-0 and chasing starting goalie Teddy Hume from the game.

Despite being held to only one goal Friday night, the No. 2 Penn State Icers managed to win their 19th-straight ACHA game.

Elite may miss playoffs

The ACHA tournament has a simple format -- the top-16 teams qualify, and the other 39 go home.

Or do they?

Though the idea is to have the top-16 teams in the final coaches rankings of the regular season, there are automatic bids given to the six conference winners and one bid given to the tournament's host.

This year, two teams -- Stony Brook and Canton -- have already received automatic bids for winning their respective conferences, but neither team will likely finish in the top-16. Stony Brook is currently No. 18, while Canton is not even ranked.

Icers prepare for tough test in front of net

When asked at practice earlier this week about what to expect from No. 14 Delaware this weekend, Penn State Icers goaltender Teddy Hume said the Fighting Blue Hens will be a desperate hockey club.

With Delaware in danger of missing nationals, the team is expected to come out hard as it looks for two potentially season-saving wins this weekend against the No. 2 Icers.

And for Penn State, that means preparing for the possible increase in traffic in front of its goaltenders.

Icers, Blue Hens to face off after scrappy December meeting

The last time these two teams played, Delaware goalie Kurt Pflumm darted away from the official escorting him to the locker room as the crowd rose to its feet.

Pflumm's target was Penn State Icers goalie Teddy Hume, who stood in his crease as one thought raced through his mind.

"I was just thinking, 'What the hell am I going to do?' " Hume said with a laugh. "I've never been in a fight before."

The altercation was the climax of a game against the Blue Hens that saw 14 penalties in the third period, including two game misconducts between the rivals. However, with Delaware on the docket this weekend, Penn State doesn't expect any flare-ups.

Goalies focusing on rebound control

The familiar gray mask was back in net at Tuesday's practice.

Penn State goalie Teddy Hume had traded the mask Saturday for a white suit with thin blue stripes as he watched from the bleachers on his day off. As Hume watched, backup goalie John Jay struggled in the third period but eventually nailed down the win.

What Jay struggled with Saturday -- and something the goalies have worked on all season -- is rebound control off saves.

As Steave Meade's shot slipped by goalie John Jay, and the Greenberg Ice Pavilion fell silent, no one on the bench panicked.

Depth makes up for lack of superstar

As a team, the Penn State Icers are ranked right near the top of the ACHA.

But individually, they have nobody anywhere near the league leaders in any of the major statistical categories.

Despite being ranked No. 2 in the ACHA and averaging 5.5 goals per game, the Icers do not have a player in the top-50 in goals scored or the top-70 in overall points.

"It's something I've pointed out to these guys a few times," coach Scott Balboni said.

Goalie battles back from rough third period

Late in the third period Saturday, John Jay laid in front of his net with the puck behind him.

The puck came to a rest at the back of the twine, and Jay was left alone with his thoughts after West Chester pulled off a frantic comeback to take the lead.

Jay was vindicated, though, when defenseman Steve Thurston scored to tie the game. Though Jay eventually helped the Penn State Icers win the game, the scene summed up a dissapointing third period that saw him give up three goals.

With 1:13 left in regulation Saturday afternoon and his team trailing by one, Penn State coach Scott Balboni called a timeout and gathered his players.

As music blared from the Greenberg Ice Pavilion loudspeaker, the Icers on the bench and the six skaters on the ice -- including defenseman Steve Thurston -- just leaned in to the huddle.

Three seconds later, Thurston delivered on a shot from the point that tied the game and propelled the No. 2 Icers to a 5-4 shootout win against No. 19 West Chester.

PSU's special teams shine in home-and-home sweep

When forward Marek Polidor scored a powerplay goal in the first period Friday night, the floodgates opened.

After that goal, the Penn State Icers tallied another two goals with the man advantage and a shorthanded goal in their weekend sweep of West Chester.

In Friday's contest, a 3-1 Icers win, Penn State scored all three of its goals either with the man advantage or shorthanded.

The game helped spark a weekend that was the Icers' first with multiple power play goals since Dec. 11.

They won that game, 10-3, against Niagara.

With Penn State scoring goals this weekend in all three stages of the game, it's something the Icers believe shows their versatility as a team.

Shift changes game for Icers

When Kurt Collins pumped his fist in celebration Saturday afternoon, he seemed to direct the early bad vibes of the No. 5 Penn State Icers off to the rafters with it.

Before Collins and his linemates Nick Seravalli and Dominic Morrone took the ice for just another shift near the end of the second period, the Icers were in danger of suffering their first home loss of the season.

But in the span of just more than a minute, the line produced one of the best shifts of the season and brought the Icers back from a two-goal deficit against Washington & Jefferson.

Icers survive scare at home

Midway through the second period after a missed offensive opportunity, Tim O'Brien glanced toward the Greenberg Ice Pavilion rafters, shaking his head.

For the first 36:28 of gameplay Saturday afternoon, that reaction described the disposition of the No. 5 Penn State Icers.

It was only after the Icers pulled their starting goalie and scored four consecutive goals in the final 20-plus minutes that Penn State erased a two-goal deficit and beat Washington & Jefferson, 5-3.

Jay comes off bench to spark Icers

In hockey etiquette, the starting goalie is always at the head of the line leading the team out of the tunnel and onto the ice.

As per tradition, when the Penn State Icers came out on the ice for the third period Saturday afternoon, the goalie led them out of the tunnel. But for the first time since November, it wasn't Teddy Hume.

Instead it was John Jay -- who replaced Hume in the second period -- leading the Icers out in the middle of his relief performance that spurred the Icers' 5-3 win against Washington & Jefferson.

Icers beat Robert Morris in exhibition at Mellon Arena

In the team's first game in almost a month, the Penn State Icers needed two goals from Paul Daley in the final period to beat Robert Morris, 3-2, Friday night at Mellon Arena. Unfortunately for the Icers, it won't count.

The game became an exhibition match Friday after a pair of glitches caused delays at the arena. A malfunction in the main scoreboard occurred during the Penguins-Flyers game according to the Icers Web site.

The Web site also stated the problem was fixed Friday morning but then the crane fixing the scoreboard malfunctioned as well and couldn't be moved off the ice. Because of the problem, the Penn State game was re-scheduled until 6:45 p.m. as a two-period exhibition match that wouldn't count in the standings.

Icers excited to play at Igloo

It might be one of the most inconspicuous major arenas in the country.

It's hidden by the skyscrapers of downtown Pittsburgh and tucked away from the three rivers. Mellon Arena's mammoth silver dome emerges just above street level and is flanked by a marquis almost as tall as the concrete at street level.
The oldest building in the NHL and the current home of the Pittsburgh Penguins was built in 1961 as the home of the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera. The silver dome is actually the world's largest retractable roof, made up of eight panels. That's what gave it the infamous "Igloo" nickname.
In its 40-plus years the arena has seen concerts, four Stanley Cup Finals, basketball games and hosted a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie.
Now in its last season, it'll see the Penn State Icers Friday for the fifth time, but only the second since 1975 according to Penn State Hockey webmaster Rodney Martin.

Scott Balboni's teams live by one mantra -- academics, family and hockey.

In the month of December, the first two factors take precedent over the latter.

After playing a combined 18 games during October and November, the Penn State Icers will play three games in the month of December, with Penn State's matchup against Niagara tonight finishing up the slate.

The Icers will then be off until Jan. 8 when they will take on Robert Morris.

Team's attitude intimidates

Coaches always preach to play through the whistle.

On Saturday night, that took on a whole new meaning.

As the Penn State Icers took on their rival Delaware, each whistle brought a conference of Icers and Blue Hens as words and shoves were exchanged and referees sprinted in to squash the fracas. Those shoves and words turned into a third period that featured a wild sequence of scrums, penalties and misconducts.

While these types of incidents aren't commonplace for Penn State, the Icers do believe that it ties into the team's physical nature.

It's not necessarily how a team starts that matters, but how it finishes.

Just ask the No. 5 Penn State Icers.

The Icers (17-2-1, 11-0-1 ESCHL) have won six games this season in which they were either tied or trailing at some point in the third period.

"The guys keep coming back and playing hard," coach Scott Balboni said. "Obviously we're a young team, so we're making some mistakes up front. I wish we didn't have to keep coming from behind, but that's the nature of the game sometimes."

Polidor provides spark to Icer offense

Marek Polidor stood behind the red line, waiting for the signal from the referee.

He was one goal away from a hat trick, and now he was getting a chance on a penalty shot against Delaware goalie S.J. Broadt.

If it was going to happen for Polidor, this would be the game, and this would be the time. He had already scored twice earlier in the game, and by this point the Penn State Icers had a commanding lead over Delaware.

PSU sweeps heated series

Despite having allowed no goals through the first two periods, the story of the No. 5 Penn State Icers' game Saturday was not junior Teddy Hume's first potential shutout of the season.

Nor was it senior captain Matt Kirstein scoring his first goal since returning from a sprained medial collateral ligament (MCL) that kept him out more than a month.

Marek Polidor had a chance for a hat trick on a penalty shot -- but that wasn't it either.

With Penn State (17-2-1, 11-0-1) leading No. 13 Delaware 6-0 -- the eventual final score -- a skirmish erupted with 12:20 left in the third, resulting in six combined penalties and two Delaware players receiving 10-minute misconducts. Overall Saturday, the teams combined for 60 penalty minutes, 40 of which came in the third, and two Delaware ejections.

Kirstein impactful in return

It was as if he never left.

As the Penn State Icers neared the midway point of the first period, forward George Saad fired on Delaware goalie S.J. Broadt.

The puck bounced off the goaltender and ricocheted to Icers senior captain Matt Kirstein.

Kirstein fired at the net, bouncing the puck off of Broadt and into the back of the net.

That first goal of the game propelled Penn State to a 6-0 victory and weekend sweep of rival Delaware as Kirstein finally made his return from injury.

The senior had been sidelined with a sprained medial collateral ligament (MCL) that had kept him out of practice and the lineup since late October.

Hume's shutout overshadowed

At the apex of Saturday's chaos-filled third period, Teddy Hume just leaned back against the crossbar of his net.

When Delaware goalie Kurt Pflumm skated out to his blueline, possibly trying to challenge Hume to a fight, he still leaned against the crossbar. And when Pflumm charged out of the tunnel after being ejected trying to get to Hume, Hume didn't move a muscle.

The near-fight between the two goalies is perhaps what the lasting image of the Penn State Icers' 6-0 win over Delaware Saturday afternoon will be, but lost in the Icers' offensive outburst and astronomical penalty minutes is Hume's 38-save shutout against the No. 13 team in the country.

Icers dominate penalty-filled game

On a day that featured a senior captain scoring a goal in his return and a goalie following up a solid performance last night with a shutout today, the focus of the game was something else completely.

Matt Kirstein's first goal in his return from a knee injury and Hume's 38 saves in the No. 5 Penn State Icers' 6-0 victory were overshadowed by a combined 60 penalty minutes and three ejections between the two teams.

A night after a comeback victory in a shootout, the Icers dominated the No. 13 Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens, using a four-goal second period to take control of the game.

Icers win in a shootout thriller

In a battle between ESCHL rivals Friday night, 60 minutes of regulation hockey wasn't enough to decide a winner between the No. 5 Penn State Icers and the No. 13 Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens.

Neither was five minutes of overtime. Or the typical three rounds of a shootout.

It took seven rounds, but the Penn State Icers (16-2-1, 10-0-1) held off Delaware (12-6-0, 6-3-0) with a 2-1 victory behind 34 saves from junior goalie Teddy Hume -- not including the six shots he turned away in the shootout.

Icers see merit in faceoffs

It might seem odd to some that the outcome of a hockey game can be decided by the drop of a puck.

But such is the importance of the faceoff in hockey, where a referee dropping a puck into a small red circle enclosed by two forwards engaged in a mini-battle royale can lead to game-changing moments.

And because it's one of the few times where teams can run designed plays instead of doing it on the fly, Penn State coach Scott Balboni and the rest of the Icers place an importance on faceoffs.

Sometimes, it just takes a little bit of time.

In October, the Penn State Icers allowed 25 goals in 10 games, almost three goals a game.

As the calendar flipped to November, Penn State started to come together defensively. Going into the final game of the month, the Icers allowed 11 goals in seven games, or 1.57 goals a game.

In that final game, Penn State was blasted with seven goals in a loss to NCAA Division III Massachusetts-Boston. That defeat raised the Icers' average to 2.25 goals a game.

There were no words needed.

As teammate after teammate found their way to the injured list, there was no panic.

No one frantically scrambled for answers. There was only calmness.

The Penn State Icers knew what they needed to do. Then, they went out and did it.

That led to a win streak that spanned parts of two months until last Sunday's 7-4 loss to NCAA Division III Massachusetts-Boston.

Once again, the Icers are faced with adversity.

Despite adding one to their loss column this past weekend, the No. 6 Penn State Icers were relieved to finally have a weekend in which they didn't add to their list of injuries.

With only three games left this semester before a four-week break, the Icers' injured list is dwindling and coach Scott Balboni expects to have a completely healthy roster after the break barring any further injuries.

"If nothing happens, we'll be fully healthy," he said, "and it'd be great because our schedule the second semester is a lot more intense. It'll be important for us to be healthy coming down that stretch."

Ex-Icer to lead flyover at game Saturday

Collegian article about former Icer Joe Bassett being part of the flyby at Beaver Stadium....."Fourteen years ago, he stood in the crowd watching jets fly over Beaver Stadium before a football game, dreaming he would be the pilot in one of those jets some day. Now, Saturday, former Penn State Icer Charles Joe Bassett III will be. Before the Penn State Nittany Lions kick off their clash with the Ohio State Buckeyes, Bassett will lead one of four F-16 jets over the stadium. "Ever since my first football game in 1995, I thought it'd be really cool to do that," he said.

Hume taking stranglehold on starting job

Collegian article about starting goalie Teddy Hume....."There's no question about who's the No. 1 goaltender now. The silver mask sits on top of the net at the beginning of each period, waiting for Teddy Hume to lead the Penn State Icers out of the tunnel like he always does. He puts on the silver mask he's had for the past five years that's made his goaltender brethren, John Jay and Dan Ivanir, spectators in recent weeks. Maybe nothing says more about his situation than getting two consecutive starts last weekend for Penn State against West Virginia, stopping 29 of 32 shots in the two games and making several key saves......"

Icers control WVU in weekend sweep

Collegian article reviewing the past home games against WVU....."No Taylor Cera, no Matt Kirstein, no problem. With two of the Penn State Icers missing this weekend's action with injuries, the Icers responded with a sweep of No. 25 West Virginia. First it was a 10-1 rout on Friday night that was capped off with a Ryan Paradis goal at the third-period buzzer. Less than 24 hours later, Penn State picked up where it left off, crushing the Mountaineers 8-2 and putting together what Icers coach Scott Balboni believes was their most consistent and complete weekend of the season....."

Icers look for consistency throughout games

Collegian article about consistency issues....."Leading 3-1 in the second period last Friday night against Drexel, victory looked inevitable. As the Penn State Icers skated to the locker room at the end of the period, the scoreboard read 3-3. Like that, Drexel was back into the game. While Penn State went on to win 6-3, it's that lack of consistency that has eluded the Icers this season. All year long, the Icers have stressed playing a full 60 minutes of hockey, with Tim O'Brien leading the rallying cry. In his eyes, Penn State is getting closer to finally reaching that magic number, saying the team has played about 40 minutes of strong hockey.

Unknowns positive for team

Collegian article about the number of unknown factors ....."Seventeen players who have put on the No. 6 Penn State Icers sweater in the 2009-10 season did the same thing last season. Tim O'Brien and Teddy Hume are still there. As are Ryan Paradis and Steve Thurston and John Conte. But goaltender Nick Signet isn't there. Neither is forward Luke DeLorenzo. But despite not having the veteran leadership of 13 seniors like last season, there's a feeling that the unknown factors around this team could possibly be a positive attribute.

Captain Kirstein, Cera to miss time

Collegian article about Icers captains missing play time due to injuries....."Penn State Icers forward Matt Kirstein has a sprained medial collateral ligament (MCL) and expects to be out for three to five weeks, he said Wednesday. Kirstein suffered the injury during practice Tuesday, when he suffered a big hit by a teammate during a drill. Penn State coach Scott Balboni called the injury a "stinger" Tuesday, but Wednesday Kirstein said the injury was a sprained MCL. The senior forward did not give a definite timetable for his return and he joins a growing list of injured Icers. "It's real frustrating just for the fact alone that I thought I had a pretty good year last year," Kirstein said. "I wanted to be able to be a leader for the team on the ice and continue to play the way I played. I think the toughest thing is it's tough to be a leader when you're not able to play. You can do many things, but being on the ice with the guys is the biggest thing you miss." Kirstein -- who said he already started to rehab the knee before he went to the doctor Wednesday -- had been in and out of the lineup so far this season. ".....

O'Brien finds a groove offensively

Collegian article on Tim O'Brien....."If there were any doubts that Tim O'Brien was back prior to last weekend, they were silenced in a big way. During the weekend set against Drexel, O'Brien scored three goals, as many as he had scored all year up to that point as the Penn State Icers swept the Dragons. With O'Brien taking the summer off battling a wrist injury, the junior felt he lost the touch in the work with his hands and feet along with the other nuances of the game.".....

Icers get help from former goalie

Collegian article featuring Brian Gratz, who is now the DII coach....."It may be his first year as the Penn State Icers' goalie coach, but Brian Gratz is no stranger to the nets in the Greenberg Ice Pavilion. After all, Gratz is a former Penn State goalie himself, playing for both the ACHA Division I Icers and the Division II Ice Lions in his time at Penn State.
Roster still in flux for Icers

Collegian article about possible Icers lineup changes......"Near the end of Monday's optional skate at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion, Matt Kirstein, back in full pads and skates, sat in the Penn State Icers bench, talking to assistant coach Pat Fung. The senior forward returned to the ice Monday, testing out a groin injury that has bothered him for most of the season and kept him out of the lineup recently. His status is still up in the air for this weekend against West Virginia, as is Taylor Cera's because of his ankle injury. If the two of them are out, Penn State coach Scott Balboni might have to shuffle his roster as he has had to a good amount this season. But if there is a silver lining to that, it's that's Balboni has given large chunks of the roster playing time and many have capitalized.".....

Collegian article about Taylor Cera's injury....."The status of Penn State Icers junior forward Taylor Cera is up in the air for this weekend's games against West Virginia. Assistant coach Bill Downey said X-rays on Cera's ankle, which was injured in Friday's 6-3 win over Drexel, were negative. "I think [the team] is just going to take it day by day and see how the pain is in his leg," said Downey. "They'll let us know when he's ready to go, and we'll get him back in there."

Victory over Drexel avenges previous loss

Collegian article about the away win against Drexel....."Last season, the No. 6 Penn State Icers outshot Drexel by 46 and still suffered their first loss to the Dragons in the program's history. This year, sophomore Paul Daley refused to let anything similar happen again. After the Dragons tied the game with 1:23 left, Daley retaliated only 14 seconds later with a goal of his own, giving the Icers a 4-3 win Saturday night in a game where Penn State outshot Drexel 72-14. "We wanted to respond right away and take away any momentum they got off that goal," Daley said. The idea was to go out there and make a big hit or big play, and fortunately, that's what we did." The game was reminiscent of Drexel's last-minute upset a year ago, when the Dragons scored with only 26 seconds left to win a game dominated by Penn State's offense.

Icers work on shootouts

Collegian article about Icers working on shootouts....."Tim O'Brien found himself all alone. With the score tied at three following overtime Saturday night, O'Brien stood at center ice with the puck on his stick.
O'Brien took off down the ice, one-on-one with West Chester goalie Matt Murnane. The junior made his move and fired the puck. He was denied. The shootout continued. The Penn State Icers went on to lose that shootout 3-2 and the game 4-3 as Penn State split its weekend set against the Golden Rams. O'Brien earned that leadoff spot by winning the weekly shootout competition held during practice last Thursday......"

Team struggling with man advantage

Collegian article discussing inconsistencies in recent games....."Perhaps the best way to describe the Penn State Icers power play early this season would be to liken it to a mirage. Here one second and gone the next. The Icers' inconsistency with special teams -- both on the power play and taking penalties -- has been one of the themes a month into the ACHA season. But while the Icers have attributed the penalties to their style of play, they're still trying to figure out why the power play has taken a Jekyll-and-Hyde-like quality. "One game we click and one game we're not," Penn State coach Scott Balboni said. "Right now we're just a little inconsistent. We still have some young guys learning different positions, and I think as they get more comfortable with time, that will continue to get more and more steady."

Icers getting production from offense

Collegian article about overall offensive depth on the team......"Despite having played barely half the amount of games as No. 1 Lindenwood and scoring 33 fewer goals so far, the No. 3 Penn State Icers are keeping up with the Lions in one area -- overall offensive depth.
Only six games into the season, the Icers have already had 15 skaters light the lamp, whereas Lindenwood only has 17 players who have scored, despite playing five more games than Penn State. "Depth is going to be something that is going to carry us a long way this year," junior Tim O'Brien said. "A lot of guys are getting points for us early in the season, and that's what we need, so hopefully we can continue doing that throughout the year."

Despite what the recent history might suggest, the No. 3 Penn State Icers goalie doesn't believe the team is jinxed when it comes to winning at the Ice Line in West Chester. Instead of taking the ice, he'll be focused on a court -- more specifically, the Homecoming Court. As one of the five finalists for Homecoming King, Kirstein, who has been nursing a sore groin anyway, will miss his team's two games to participate in the annual festivities. "Even if he's able to play with his injury, he's not gonna be playing," coach Scott Balboni said. "Because of the homecoming court situation, it's very important for him as a person, and for the program as well, for him to represent himself at those activities this weekend."

Collegian article about Icers working on curbing penalties....."It's all about keeping the skates moving. With the Penn State Icers still trying to fight through a rash of penalties during this early part of the season, the team knows it has to be a sound unit at all times on the ice. And it all starts with something as simple as moving their feet.
Penn State picked up 24 penalties this past weekend against Ohio, and while some of those were action penalties that come from the Icers physical style of play, it's the penalties resulting from a lack of hustle that bother the Icers the most....."

Saturday morning, they'll make the three-hour, 170-mile trek down to West Chester to face the Golden Rams later that night, 22-and-a-half hours after Friday night's faceoff.
Depth at forward benefits team

Collegian article about forwards on Icers teams....."Look at the top of the Penn State Icers team scoring leaders, and you won't find Tim O'Brien. O'Brien, last year's leading scorer, has three points in four games, but only one goal. Instead, the player who leads the Icers in points and goals through the first four games is freshman Dominic Morrone, who has four goals and six points. Morrone is one of three freshmen in the top four in scoring and one of the forwards providing needed depth for the Icers while some of the veterans have struggled finding the net. "Each of them have been able to contribute their own," Penn State coach Scott Balboni said. "Going into the year, we knew that some freshmen had to step up and play just by pure numbers, and obviously there's a few of them who have stepped up, played real well."

Collegian article about followup since away weekend at Ohio....."If the opening weekend for the Penn State Icers against Towson was comparable to the football team playing Eastern Illinois, then this past weekend was akin to playing Michigan in Ann Arbor. The Icers went to Ohio last weekend, bringing a young squad with many new faces into a hostile arena against the No. 5 Bobcats. They left the Buckeye State with a weekend split against their arch nemesis and a sense of where the Icers are four games into the season. "A lot of the younger guys stepped up in a big-time atmosphere," junior forward Tim O'Brien said. "Ohio is one of our top competitors and one of our biggest rivals. I think our team got a good understanding of where we stand together and how far we've come since the preseason."

Collegian article reviewing the split weekend at Ohio University, with a loss at the Friday game followed by a win in OT at the Saturday game....."After giving up the game-winning goal with a man in the penalty box Friday night, the No. 3 Penn State Icers found themselves in a similar situation Saturday against the No. 5 Ohio Bobcats. Clinging to a one goal lead, the Icers gave up the game-tying goal with two guys sitting in the box and less than a minute left. In overtime, however, the Icers (3-1-0) managed to avoid giving Ohio any more powerplays, something the team has struggled with through the first two weekends of the season, and eventually scored with only one second left in the extra period to win 4-3......"

Collegian article about the away games against Ohio University....."Once the Icers step foot into Ohio University's Bird Arena, they'll know they're in for an adventure. The arena houses a rink with a neutral zone about 60 percent the normal size with bigger than normal offensive zones. Bird Arena's seating areas are right on top of the benches and rise up over the players as a standing room only crowd creates a hostile environment for any opposing team. Only two weeks into this young season, the Icers will play in Bird Arena, embarking on their first road trip of the year, one that coach Scott Balboni calls the toughest of the season....."

Collegian article about Matt Kirstein....."Matt Kirstein has never cut a corner in his life.
He's never cut them as a student, or in the job market, and that effort helped him line up a job on Wall Street after graduation. It was only a matter of time before that type of effort paid off on the hockey rink."

Forward lines could change

Collegian article about possible changes in the Icers lineup....."One team, four lines, eight different combinations. That's been coach Scott Balboni's equation during the infancy of the 2009-10 Penn State Icers season. There have been two games so far, and four different forward lines have been used for each one. With the young Icers' biggest test of the early season coming this weekend at Ohio, Balboni said he will probably juggle the forward lines yet again for this weekend. Whether he will, however, hinges on the health of his forwards entering the weekend....."

Team searching for No. 1

Collegian article about goalies....."With only two practices left for the Penn State Icers before they take on top-10 rival Ohio University this weekend, the team is still unsure who will be in net come game time Friday night. As the team prepares for what coach Scott Balboni called the team's toughest road trip of the season, juniors John Jay and Teddy Hume continue to battle for the No. 1 goaltending spot. Hume is the only goalie with experience against the Bobcats, making 43 saves in a 5-3 victory last year, and although Balboni said that performance is a factor, it will not solely determine who starts the series opener....."

Tough schedule upcoming for young Icers squad

Collegian article about upcoming games....."Every game, every practice, they see them.
Every time the Penn State Icers step on the ice at Greenberg Ice Pavilion, they see the championship banners from years past hanging behind the benches.
Penn State once again has aspirations for a run at an ACHA National Championship. But with a young roster, there are questions early on that should be answered relatively quickly. After last weekend's warm-up against Towson, the Icers quickly delve into a much tougher slate starting this weekend at Ohio......"

Collegian article about the younger players on the team...."Coming into the season, the young members of the Penn State Icers were looking to make an impact.
Two games against Towson and 26 points combined later, it's safe to say they have. Two forwards, sophomore Nick Seravalli and freshman Dominic Morrone, have been especially effective with three goals and an assist each. Seravalli believes this is only the start of things to come....."

That was a common sight this past weekend for the Penn State Icers. Sixteen times that music played over two days as the Icers went on the penalty kill....."

The Penn State ACHA Division I Icers did what they were supposed to do: beat the Towson Tigers 15-3 to sweep both games during the weekend. Penn State (2-0) dominated Towson (1-3) Saturday, outshooting the Tigers 67-15 and scoring eight goals in the third period....."

Collegian article covering defenseman Corey Bell possibly missing playing due to an injury at the Blue White game - "Scott Balboni is already trying to break in six new faces on his blueline this season. Now the Penn State ACHA Division I Icers' coach might not have one of his returning defensemen.
Carey Bell said Tuesday that he probably wouldn't play in Friday's season opener at home against Towson after the defenseman was cut on the chin.
Bell was injured when he was on the receiving end of a big hit Friday night from forward Marek Polidor behind the net during the Blue-White scrimmage. He left the game from the bench soon after the check and needed what Balboni estimated to be about 40 stitches to close the cut......"
