Introduction
[By William "Will" Rusk, Newsletter Editor]
The Winter World University Games ("WUGs") will be held January 17th to 27th in Torino, Italy. The games will held at the Tazzoli Rink and the Torre Pellice. The WUGs, also known as the Universiade, are held every two years under the auspices of FISU, the International University Sports Federation (www.fisu.net).
The US University Select hockey team (Team USA) features 22 players that were selected after an USA Hockey identification camp held in August, which featured non-varsity players from the three men's divisions (333 teams total) in the ACHA.
Keith Jordan, Frank Berry, and Lukas DeLorenzo from the Icers are on the team. Forwards Mike McMullen and Nate Obringer are alternates. Other ACHA Men's Division I teams that have players on the team are Illinois, Rhode Island, Michigan-Dearborn, and Ohio University.
The team's coach is Chad Cassel from University of Illinois. Assistant coaches are Joe Augustine from Rhode Island and David Debol from Michigan-Dearborn.
The WUGs features 1500 players from the 17-28 year range in 11 sports and 72 metal events. It is the second largest sporting event in the world.
The last US team had a 3-3-0 record in 2003, and the US returned to the games in 2001.
