Behind hat tricks from Mike Carrano and Kevin Jaeger and a shutout from Chris Matteo, the No. 2 Penn State Icers cruised to an 11-0 victory over visiting Washington and Jefferson Friday night (2/18/2005). The Icers improve to 22-6-3 while the Presidents fall to 15-12-1.
The Icers jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first period and never looked back. The freshman line of Jesse Weinzimmer, Paul Zodtner and Mike McMullen combined for two goals in under a minute, with Weinzimmer getting the first from Zodtner and McMullen, and McMullen getting the second from Weinzimmer and Zodtner. The other four goals of the period came from seniors, with Eric Harbaugh and Carrano each scoring one, and Jaeger netting two.
In the second period, Carrano added two more to complete his hat trick, and Jaeger put in his third as well. The Icers led at the second intermission by score of 9-0.
Dan McKeen and Keith Jordan added goals in the third to make it a 11-0 final.
Jaeger had three goals and two assists on the night. Those five points tie him for fifth on the Icers’ all-time points scoring list with 260. He also now has 128 career goals, which is just one behind all-time leader Lynn Sipe.
SHOTS ON GOAL: PSU – 49, W&J – 24
POWER PLAY: PSU – 2/7, W&J – 0/7

He now has 130 for his career, one ahead of the current leader, Lynn Sipe. He also has 263 career points, which gives him sole possession of fifth place on the all-time points list.
Seven Icer seniors (Mike Carrano, Joe Maglaque, Chris Rome, Garrett Divins, Greg Windsor, Jaeger, Eric Harbaugh) were also honored before the last regular season game of their career. The Icers will now prepare for the ACHA National Tournament at Robert Morris College in Illinois, where they head in as the No. 2 seed and will face West Chester in the first round on March 3.
The Icers out-shot the Presidents 13-5 in the first period, but only managed one goal off the stick of Paul Zodtner. In the second, Jaeger scored his first of the game to make it a 2-0 lead, but Washington and Jefferson added two goals in the last minute of the period to tie it up. In the third, Jaeger set the career mark with his second of the game, and Joe Maglaque added one for good measure to make it 4-2 final.
For the game, the Icers out-shot the Presidents, 38-22. Icer goalie Paul Mammola saved 20 of those shots to get the win, while Washington and Jefferson goalie Andrew Torchia had 34 saves in a losing effort. Penn State was 2-for-3 on the power play and Washington and Jefferson was 1-for-4.

With the ACHA National Tournament only 3 weeks away the marquee match-up in the ACHA this weekend took place between the #2 Penn State Icers and the #4 ranked Fighting Illini of Illinois at the "Big Pond" in Champaign. The Icers came away with a crucial hard fought 2-1 victory Friday (2/11/2005) behind the stellar goaltending of Sophomore Paul Mammola (32 saves on 33 shots) and power play goals from senior defenseman Joe Maglaque and senior forward Kevin Jaeger. With that goal Jaeger moves past former line mate Glenn Zuck into sole possession of 2nd place on the career goal scoring list with 125 goals.

On Saturday (2/12/2005) the two teams went into OT without resolving the outcome as they played to a 3-3 tie. Once again the Icers power play generated 3 goals and went 5 for 6 on the weekend while the Icers penalty killers held Illinois to just 1 for 7. Icer goals were scored by freshman Mike McMullen, State College native Keith Jordan and senior Mike Carrano. The Icers held a 3-2 lead before the Illini tied the game on their lone power play goal of the weekend by Brian Coleman with just over 8 minutes remaining in the game. Paul Mammola made 22 saves as the Icers improved to 21-6-3 while the Illini fall to 20-5-3. With the win and the tie on the road the Icers make a strong case to keep the #2 seed for the ACHA National tournament March 3-6 in Chicago.

The ACHA’s No. 2 Penn State Icers (19-6-2) defeated the Delaware Blue Hens (16-16) Friday night (Feb 4th) at the Penn State Ice Pavilion by a score of 6-0.
The Icers’ Kevin Jaeger tallied one goal and one assist on the night, giving him 250 points for his career. The goal also tied him for second place on the Icers all-time goal scoring list at 124 with former teammate Glenn Zuck. He needs six more to pass Lynn Sipe for the all-time lead.
Icers’ goaltender Paul Mammola stopped all 19 shots he faced to get the shutout win. Mike Carrano had two goals on the night, while Luc Walker had three assists. Paul Zodtner and Keith Jordan each had two assists.
Penn State out-shot the Blue Hens 39-19 and went two-for-six on the power play, while Delaware went zero-for-four.
The two teams will meet again Saturday (today) at 3:30 p.m. As part of the Alumni weekend festivities, Hall of Fame inductions will take place at the first intermission, when Coach Joe Battista, John Grainda and John Surma will be honored. During the second intermission, the 1980, 1990 and 2000 championship teams will be recognized. The game will be followed by a Meet-the-Icers session and the annual alumni game.

The No. 2 Penn State Icers defeated No. 20 Delware 6-2 Saturday (Feb. 5th) at the Penn State Ice Pavilion in a game riddled by penalties. Mike McMullen and Keith Jordan each scored two goals for the Icers, who swept the weekend series and improved to 20-6-2. Delaware fell to 16-17.
The score was 2-1 after the first period, as the teams played each other fairly even. But the Icers dominated the second period as Delaware was hit with penalty after penalty. The Icers out-shot the Blue Hens 19-4 in the period. At one point, following a Delaware game misconduct, they were called for slashing resulting in a five-on-three situation for Penn State. The Icers promptly pulled goalie Paul Mammola, who recorded his third consecutive win, to make it a six-on-three advantage. Jordan scored his second of the game to make it 4-2 after two periods.
Penn State started the third on the power play after Delaware was called for a bench minor at the 20 minute-mark of the second period. McMullen put his second goal in 23 seconds later to make it 5-2. Greg Windsor added another power play goal for the 6-2 final score.

The ACHA’s No. 2 Penn State Icers defeated No. 16 Mercyhurst 6-2 Friday night (January 21) in the first round of the annual Nittany Lion Invitational Tournament. Mike Carrano and Brett Wilson scored two goals apiece in the Icers victory to help their record to 16-5-2. Mercyhurst fell to 18-5-0.
No. 19 Towson (17-11-1) defeated Slippery Rock (9-8-0) in the opening game by a score of 5-3. Slippery Rock will face the Mercyhurst Saturday at 5 p.m. in the consolation game, while Penn State will meet Towson at 8 p.m. in hopes of defending the NLIT title.
Penn State and Mercyhurst played a fast-paced first period that saw only one goal and three penalties. The Icers’ Sean Kenney put in a slap-shot from the right wing after a face-off to put Penn State up 1-0 at the first intermission.
In the second period, Penn State found some more luck with their shots, scoring three times. Luc Walker netted one at the 8:23 mark, and Carrano followed with his two including a 4-on-4 goal with less than a minute to go. The Icers led 4-0 after two.
Penn State’s Wilson scored his two in the third period to give the Icers a total of six. Both of his goals bounced off an unsuspecting Mercyhurst defender before trickling into the net. Mercyhurst’s Brent Klimow added two goals for the visitors, but it was too little, too late and the Icers emerged victorius 6-2.
Penn State’s Paul Mammola got the win in goal, stopping 27 of 28 shots. Scott Blackman relieved him in the third period, and stopped four of five. Mercyhurst’s Brody Micolucci stopped 35 of the 41 shots he faced.
Penn State had 41 shots on goal, while Mercyhurst had 33.
Penn State was one-for-four on the power play and Mercyhurst was one-for-seven.

The ACHA’s No. 2 Penn State Icers (17-5-2) defeated Towson Saturday night by a score of 5-4 to capture the championship trophy of the 24th annual Nittany Lion Invitational Tournament. Brett Wilson scored two goals for the second straight night, including the game-winner, and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Mercyhurst defeated Slippery Rock 9-6 to take third place honors.
Towson (17-12-1) kicked things off with a goal roughly five minutes into the game by P.J. Aquiar. The Tigers then fought off a five-on-three Icers power play late in the period, but Wilson scored soon after Penn State became full strength to tie it at one. Penn State’s Mike Carrano put another goal in with just 11 seconds remaining in the period to give the Icers the momentum and the 2-1 lead.
Towson took the momentum right back to begin the second period behind goals from Chad Sillery and Miroslav Pezda to make 3-2. The Icers then pulled goaltender Chris Matteo for Paul Mammola, who had earned the win on Friday night. The change seemed to help, as Penn State got goals from Luc Walker and Dave Arcobello, and they took a 4-3 lead into the intermission.
The third period was scoreless until the 16:27 mark, when Towson’s Erik Dixon tied the game at four. The game looked to be headed for overtime, but Wilson put in his fourth goal of the tournament with 16 seconds left in the game and two seconds left on the power play to make it 5-4 in favor of the Icers.
Penn State’s Chris Matteo and Paul Mammola combined for the win in net, with Matteo stopping seven of 10 shots, and Mammola stopping seven of eight. Raymond Turnbull stopped 39 of 44 for Towson. Penn State had 44 shots on goal and were one-for-eight on the power play, while Towson had 18 shots and went zero-for-one.

Link : Digital Collegian - Icers get revenge with win over URI

The ACHA’s No. 2 Penn State Icers suffered their worst loss in recent memory Friday night (1/14/) to No. 1 Rhode Island by a score of 7-1 at the Penn State Ice Pavilion. The Icers (14-5-1) are now winless in three games this season against the Rams (25-1-1), after a 4-2 loss and a 0-0 tie back in November.
Penn State knew they were at a disadvantage heading into the game without stars Kevin Jaeger, Joe Maglaque and Eric Harbaugh – all of whom are in Innsbruck, Austria representing Team USA in the World University Games – while Rhode Island came to town with a full roster as they chose not to send any players overseas. But the six-goal difference wasn’t exactly expected.
URI’s Derrek Douglas scored the first goal of the game midway through the first period with just 4 seconds remaining on the power play. Mike Curran then scored with just over a minute to play to make it 2-0 at the first intermission.
Midway through the second period, Penn State looked to have gained some momentum after a streaking Mike McMullen centered the puck to Mike Carrano, who brought the standing room-only crowd to life with a goal to make it 2-1. But that’s the only time an Icer shot would get past last year’s ACHA Rookie-of-the-Year Anthony Feyock. Rhode Island then pulled away, scoring four more goals in the second and one in the third to make it a 7-1 final.

The ACHA’s No. 2 Penn State Icers knocked off No. 1 Rhode Island 4-3 Saturday (1/15) at the Penn State Ice Pavilion, handing the Rams just their second loss of the season. In doing so, they avenged Friday night’s 7-1 loss, the worst loss the Icers (15-5-2) have suffered since falling to Alabama Huntsville in 1996 by the score of 15-1.
The Rams (25-2-1) started out right where they left off on Friday, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. The first goal came from John Brennan as the Icers were trying to kill off a delayed penalty in their zone. Jason May added the second before Penn State’s Mike McMullen got the Icers on the board to make 2-1 before the first intermission.
Only one goal was scored in a penalty-filled second period, and it came from Penn State’s Sean Kenny on the power play to tie the game at two.
There was a buzz in the air as the third period started, and Penn State’s Brendan Martin set the crowd off just 13 seconds in with a shot to give the Icers the 3-2 lead. Mike Carrano added what would be the game-winner just a few minutes later, and the Icers would play solid defense, including a crucial power play kill late in the period. Then, with two minutes left, Rhode Island pulled goaltender Anthony Feyock to give them a man advantage. It paid off, with Matt Loftus putting in the Rams’ third goal with just 32 seconds remaining, but it would too little, too late and the Icers held on for the win.
The benches cleared in a near brawl after the horn, but officials and Icer coach Joe Battista were able to separate the players efficiently to put an end to this grueling season series.

On Friday night (1/7) Brandon Steffek from Ohio University scored a hat trick for the game by getting a goal in each period of the game. The lone Icers goal was scored by Lucas Walker during the second period, with assists by Mike McMullen and Mike Carrano. Paul Mammola was in goal for the Icers and had 27 saves on 30 shots. In the Ohio goal was Ryan Baklash, who had 27 saves on 28 shots.

On Saturday (1/8) the Bobcats got on the board just 3 minutes into the game as Steffick notched his 4th goal of the weekend. Junior Forward Brett Wilson answered just 2 minutes later on a deflection of a Cole Burnham shot from the point to not it at 1 goal each after one period. The Icers Mike McMullen scored a power play goal early in the second period (his 2nd game winning goal of the season vs. Ohio) and Matteo and the Icers defense sealed the win with a stellar effort. Matteo made the "Save of the season" with 7 minutes remaining when OU's Rico Day had an apparent open net back door goal only to be denied as Matteo extended his glove to stun the Ohio faithful with an acrobatic game saving stop.

Icer senior defenseman Joe Maglaque was named as one of the Captains for Team USA for the World University games. Senior forward Kevin Jaeger and Senior defenseman Eric Harbaugh are also in Innsbruck, Austria representing Team USA January 9-22. Icer Defenseman Chris Rome left Friday's game after a being kneed by an OU player and missed Saturday's game as well.

Friday December 10 2004 West Virginia University 2 PSU Icers 9

At the Penn State Ice Pavilion Friday night (12/10/2004), the ACHA’s #2 Icers defeated West Virginia by a score of 9-2. Penn State improves to 13-3-2 with the win, while West Virginia drops to 9-10.

The Icers came out firing to start the game, outshooting the Mountaineers 22-7. The first goal came just two minutes into the game when the Icers’ Jesse
Weinzimmer put one past the goalie. Four minutes later, Brett Wilson capped off an efficient power play of crisp passing with a goal of his own. Icer captain
Eric Harbaugh put one more in the net before the end of the period, making it 3-0 Penn State at the first intermission.

Brett Wilson scored his second of the game at the 4:32 mark of the second period before Drew Zinchiak finally got the Mountaineers on the board at 6:15. Soon
after that, Kevin Jaeger took the puck the length of the ice to put in the 123rd goal of his career, which places him just one behind Glenn Zuck and six
behind Lynn Sipe on the Icers all-time list. Luke Walker then added one more for the Icers after a perfect pass from behind the Icers net that banked off
the boards and reached him just as he was approaching West Virginia’s blue line. The score at the second intermission was 6-1.

In the third period, Penn State got two power play goals from Luke Walker and Matt Wallace, along with a beautiful 2-on-1 break resulting in a Mike Carrano
goal. West Virginia’s Jeff Holabaugh added one for the Mountaineers with five minutes remaining, but it was too little, too late and the Icers emerged
victorious, 9-2.

Penn State outshot the Mountaineers on the night 53-25. They were also very efficient on the power play, scoring on three of their five chances. West
Virginia only converted on one out seven chances. Paul Mammola was in goal for the first two periods for Penn State, stopping 16 shots. Chris Matteo played
the third period and stopped seven. For West Viginia, Jonathan Natonick had 42 saves and Tom O’Connor had 2.

Penn State will be off for a while until January 7 and 8, when they travel to Ohio University for two games. They will be without key players Kevin Jaeger,
Eric Harbaugh and Joe Maglaque as the trio will be representing Team USA at the World University Games in Innsbruck, Austria from January 7-23.

The ACHA’s #2 Penn State Icers hosted St. Clair College Friday night (12/3/2004) and lost to the Canadians from Windsor, Ontario by a score of 6-3. The Icers fall to 12-3-1 on the season, while St. Clair avenges their previous two losses to the Icers in October and improves to 10-6-1 after this game.
It was a very physical and penalty-filled game, with many whistles and play stoppages. In the first period, St. Clair got on the board first with a power play goal from Franco Subrani at the 16:21 mark. Penn State’s Mike Carrano then fired back just a minute and a half later to tie it at one heading into the first intermission.
Penn State jumped out to take the lead in the second period behind a goal from Cole Burnham. But then at the 12:24 mark, the game reached its physical climax
with a multi-player scrum which resulted in four separate 10-minute misconducts. This seemed to change the momentum to St. Clair, as they went on
to score two more goals from David Lewis and Jesse Ouimet to make a 3-2 game after two.
St. Clair’s Ryan Caicco kicked off the third period scoring with a goal at the 7:55 mark. The Icers’ Joe Maglaque then lined up a deep shot off of the
face-off from near the blue line at 9:30 to pull Penn State back to within one, but that was all the closer they would get. St. Clair pulled away with goals from Ryan Toms and Derek Graansma to make a 6-3 final.
St. Clair outshot the Icers 34-28. Penn State was 0-7 on the power play, while St. Clair was 2-6. Penn State goaltender Chris Matteo had 28 saves while St.
Clair’s Chris Gregoire stopped 25.

For the Saturday game (12/4) the game ended in overtime with a 1-1 tie. Paul Arcobello had the goal for the Icers and Franco Subrani had the goal for the Saints.
Paul Mammola was in goal for the Icers and faced 26 shots.

On the Friday night game (Nov. 12th) the Icers got back to their winning ways Friday night at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion with a 9-2 victory over #15 Michigan-Dearborn (6-7-1). Penn State had eight different goal scorers in the game, as they out-shot their opponents 56-21.
In the first period, the Icers shot 17 times to Michigan-Dearborn’s five, but were only able to connect on one of those attempts. Mike McMullen scored after receiving a crisp pass from the speedy Kevin Jaeger on a breakaway 3:58 into the game. That would be all the scoring for the period, however, and the Icers went into the locker room up 1-0.
While goals were hard to come by in the first period, it was a totally different story in the second, as there were nine total goals scored; seven of them to the Icers and two to Michigan-Dearborn. Penn State tallied four scores in a span of one minute and 20 seconds near the beginning of the period, coming off the sticks of Jaeger, Sean Kenney, Marc Switaj and Keith Jordan, respectively. Michigan-Dearborn then answered back with two power play goals from Jason Turri and Steve Rademacher to keep the game within reach, but by the end of the period the Icers would add three more from Jaeger, Mike Carrano and Luke Walker to make it an 8-2 game at the second intermission.
The scoring tailed off once again in the third, with the only goal of the period coming from Penn State’s Paul Zodtner to make it a 9-2 final.
Penn State was 2-for-6 on the power play, while Michigan-Dearborn went 2-for-8. The Icers’ Chris Matteo stopped 21 of the 23 pucks he faced. Michigan-Dearborn played two goalies, with Eric Pagel saving 27 of 34 shots, and Jason Ryan saving 20 of 22.

On the Saturday afternoon game (Nov. 13th) the Icers , the Icers fell 4-2 in the second game. With the loss, the Icers drop to 10-2-1 as of this game and have just one win in their last four games. With the win, UMD climbed back to .500 on the year at 7-7-1 as of this game.
In the first period, the Icers shot 17 times to UMD’s five, but neither team was able to find the net and the score was 0-0 at the first intermission.
In the second period, however, UMD came out like a totally different team. The Wolves got scores from Matt Chromy and Jason Turri to make it 2-0 about halfway through the stanza. Penn State’s Brett Wilson was able to squeak one in on the power play for the Icers with a little over three minutes left in the period to keep it a one-goal game at the break.
In the third period, UMD’s Chris Musser put in a goal at the 7:46 mark to extend the lead back to two. Not too long after that, UMD had a 2-on-1 break that looked like it may put the nail in the coffin, but they mishandled the puck and were not able to get off a decent shot. The Icers immediately turned it around and team scoring leader Kevin Jaeger flew down the ice on a 1-on-2 break and put it in to give the Icers hope and a one-goal deficit. One minute and 30 seconds later, however, Musser put in his second of the game to make 4-2. The Icers switched goaltenders at that point to change things up, and even played the last two minutes without a goaltender, but UMD’s defense would hold on to preserve the upset victory.
Despite the loss, Penn State still out-shot UMD 46-24. Penn State was 1-for-4 on the power play, while UMD went 0-for-1. Penn State’s Paul Mammola stopped 16 of 20 shots and Chris Matteo stopped the only four he faced. UMD’s Jason Ryan had 44 saves.

This weekend presented something that you would only see once a decade in Icers Hockey. Well at least something once in every eight years at least, as the Icers had their first scoreless game since 1996 on this road trip. The weekend also had the first Icers loss of the season.

On the Friday night game (11/5) Kevin Jaeger had the first goal but Rhode Island answered back with three goals to make the score 3-1. The final score was 4-2 win for Rhode Island. On Saturday Rhode Island goals Anthony Feyock stopped 38 shots while Icers goalie Paul Mammola had his first shutout (also first team shutout this season) with 35 shots on goal. The was Icers goal was scored by Mike McCullen.

The Icers also suffered some injuries this road trip weekend, including forward Greg Schwind breaking his leg in two places. Penn State was 9-1-1 and Rhode
Island was 12-0-1 after these games.

As if the previous night’s overtime classic wasn’t exciting enough, the ACHA’s No. 2 ranked Penn State Icers (9-0) and the No. 1 ranked defending national champion Ohio University Bobcats (8-2-2) went at it one more time this game. Once again the Icers came out on top with a dramatic 4-3 overtime victory, this time on a heroic game-winning goal by Kevin Jaeger.

To start the game, the arch-rivals picked up right where they left off last night. It was a rough and physical first period, highlighted by a ten-minute misconduct on Ohio’s Joe Branco due to a high stick to the face of Jaeger, which cut open the senior forward’s chin. This was just the beginning of an eventful game for Jaeger, who retaliated later in the period with a hit well after the whistle earning him a penalty of his own. The Icers Luke Walker had the only score of the period, sending Penn State to the locker room with a 1-0 lead.

The two teams continued the intense play in a penalty-marred second period. Halfway through the stanza, after a double unsportsmanlike conduct, Jaeger put in his first goal of the game to make it 2-0 Icers. However, Ohio took advantage of two Penn State penalties late in the period by scoring two power play goals. Both came from the stick of Dave Fitzgerald, with the second lighting the lamp with just six seconds to play, sending the momentum back to the Bobcats before the intermission.

The third period was scoreless until 9:12 into it when Ohio’s Dennis Belkin put in a goal to give Ohio a 3-2 lead. The Icers then unleashed a flurry of shots, with Jaeger finally finding success on the power play at the 16:38 mark, sending a 3-3 game into overtime for the second time in as many nights.

Then, with 2:56 left in the overtime period, Mike Carrano flipped an incredible high-arching pass that almost touched the rafters to a streaking Jaeger. Jaeger skated under it like a wide receiver catching a deep bomb, and fired in the game winner while being pulled down by Ohio defenders for the 4-3 win and the hat-trick. Jaeger’s three goals give him 116 for his career, which moved him past Rob Keegan into third place on the Icers all-time list.

The Icers out-shot Ohio 39-19. Penn State was 1-8 on the power play, while Ohio went 2-7. Penn State’s Chris Matteo made 16 saves on the night, while Ohio’s Ryan Baksh stopped 35 shots.

The No. 2 ranked Penn State Icers (8-0) defeated the defending national champion and No. 1 ranked Ohio University Bobcats (8-1-2) 4-3 in overtime before a packed house at the Penn State Ice Pavilion. The game was a rematch of last year’s ACHA national title game, and the Icers were able to avenge that 5-4 loss to the Bobcats with a game-winning, phenomenal overtime goal from Mike McMullen.

After Penn State President Graham Spanier drove the Zamboni and dropped the ceremonial first puck, the two teams played to a 0-0 tie at the end of first period despite the Icers dominating play outshooting Ohio 12-3.

The arch-rivals came out to the ice in a much different mood for the second period, however. Penn State and Ohio battled it out in a very physical period involving a lot of play stoppages and a few penalties. Although the teams had what seemed to be equal opportunities on goal, Ohio was able to put two in the net from Paul Warriner and Clay LaBrosse and headed to the locker room with a 2-0 lead.

The action of the game built up to what finally seemed to be the climax in the third period. Penn State’s Mike Carrano sent the standing room only crowd into a frenzy with a goal 9:27 into the period. Teague Willits-Kelley then brought everyone to their feet less than a minute later when he tied it at two goals apiece. Then, less than a minute after that, Ohio’s Dave Fitzgerald silenced the arena when he put the Bobcats up 3-2. The two teams then battled it out for awhile, and just when it seemed the game might be over, the Icers’ Joe Maglaque changed the atmosphere to near insanity when he put in the tying goal with 59 seconds left and Icer goalie Paul Mammola pulled for an extra attacker to send the game to overtime.

Overtime was passing by quickly until 1:13 left in the stanza when Penn State’s Mike McMullen weaved through the Ohio defense on a breakaway, putting in an off-balance shot to win the game. Both the crowd and the Penn State bench alike erupted as McMullen capped off the instant classic 4-3 in OT.

Penn State out-shot Ohio 35-23. Penn State was 0-3 on their power play chances, while Ohio went 0-2. Icers goaltender Paul Mammola made 20 saves while Ohio’s Ryan Baksh stopped 31 shots.
