HOME GAME VS OHIO UNIVERSITY
October 17th

PSU ICERS 7 Ohio U. 3
A loud and boisterous standing room only crowd of over 1200 helped the ACHA's #1 ranked Penn State Ice Hockey team (4-0) defeat their arch rivals, the fifth ranked Ohio University Bobcats (4-4), 7-3 in a battle that resembled a playoff game with it's intensity and emotion. The evening began with a recognition of last season's ACHA National Championship as former players Dustin Martin, Paul Crooker and Captain Neal Price presented University President Graham Spanier, Athletic Director Tim Curley and Associate AD Herb Schmidt with the Murdoch Cup as the ACHA National Championship banner was unfurled from the PSU Ice Rink rafters.
Ohio Struck first with a screen shot that eluded Icer freshman goalie Chris Matteo who settled down and played outstanding in net the rest of the game making 31 saves.
Penn State took charge after several big hits fired up the Icer crowd and Kevin Jaeger scored a pair of goals including a PPG and a 4 on 4 goal. The Icers outshot OU 18-8 in the first period.  The Bobcats came out hungry in the second period firing 13 shots on Matteo who made several spectacular saves to keep OU off the board.
Despite being outplayed most of the period, the Icers got a PPG from Brendan Roache and the eventual game winner from transfer junior defenseman Joe Magalque, his first as an Icer, during a 4 on 4 situation.  The goal was a result of an outstanding individual effort by defenseman Curtiss Patrick who beat 2 OU defenders and then found a wide open Maglaque streaking to the back door for the goal. Despite being outshot 13-8 for the period, the Icers held a 4-1 lead.
The third period was wild and wide open as the teams traded shots (PSU 14 - OU 13) in end to end non-stop action. PSU's Luke Walker scored a PPG to put the Icers ahead 5-1 but OU struck quickly to make it 5-2.  While on a Power Play, OU freshman goalie Ryan Baksh mishandled the puck putting it right on the stick of Icer penalty killer Kevin Jaeger who fired the puck into an empty net to complete his hat trick and put the Icers up 6-2. Less than 30 seconds later the Bobcats converted a PPG on a waist high deflection to get back into the game.  Icer goalie Chris Matteo recovered quickly and continued his stellar play as the Bobcats pressed hard.  Icer Defenseman Chris Rome stole a puck at the OU blueline and beat both OU defenders before firing a shot past Baksh to ice the game at 7-3.

HOME GAME VS OHIO UNIVERSITY
October 18th

PSU Icers 5 Ohio University 3
The number one ranked Icers(5-0) sweep their arch rival Ohio Bobcats(4-5) with a 5-3 victory Saturday. The Icers came out strong in the first period jumping out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Joe Maglaque and Kevin Jaeger. Maglaque's goal coming on the power play. The Icers continued to carry the play into the second period adding a third goal scored by Glenn Zuck. A Brendan Roache penalty seemed to turn the tide towards the Bobcats favor as they scored their first tally 8:36 into the second stanza. The goal was scored by Nick Bassarab on a rebound off the boards. Eight minutes later they added another goal, this one by Sean Gallagher to make it a 3-2 score. It looked as if it would be a one goal game going into the third when Kevin Jaeger made a great individual effort and scored with 10 seconds remaining in the period over the glove of Freshman goal tender Ryan Baksh. The two teams went into the third period with the Icers leading 4-2. In the third period the Bobcats continued to take the play to the Icers but Freshman goalie Chris Matteo stood strong in net keeping the Bobcats at bay. When Chris Rome scored 6:52 into the period it looked like the Icers had waited out the charge by the Bobcats. However less than a minute later Travis Preble came back and snuck one into the net between the legs of Matteo, bringing the score to 5-3. It took a great defensive effort by the entire team to hang onto the shaky two goal lead. The defensive charge was made by the line of Brendan Roache, Glenn Windsor, and Brett Wilson. In the end, the Icers were able to hold off the Bobcats to remain undefeated with a 5-3 victory.

After Curtiss Patrick took a holding penalty Eric Harbaugh extended the Icers lead with a shorthanded goal. Brendan Roache capped the scoring in the period when he and Pat Schaeffer executed a perfect 2 on 1 break. The Icers went into the intermission with a 6-1 lead.

AWAY ICERS GAME VS DELAWARE
November 14, 2003
DELAWARE 7 PSU ICERS 1
The number one ranked Penn State Icers went into this game with a twelve game winning streak, facing the tenth ranked University of Delaware Blue Hens and first year coach John O'Connor (a former Icer). Despite outshooting the Blue Hens 55-26, the Icers suffered their first lost of the season. In the first period the Blue Hens the Icers failed to convert on four power play chances and the Blue Hens made two goals. During the second period Glen Zuck made one goal but Delaware scored two goals as well. In the third period, the Blue Hens scored three more times on the power play. Alex Belkap made three goals for the Hens during the game. On the power play the Blue Hens were 4-for-8 and the Icers were 0-for-6. It was reported this was the first Blue Hens home victory over the Icers in the last twenty years.
* UPDATE NOVEMBER 19, 2003 - DELAWARE GAME  FORFEIT - It was found out that Delaware had an illegal player in this game, so they had to forefit the game. A player on the Delaware team was supposed to sit out for three games for two penalites previously, but only sat out two games before playing this game.  This means that this game does not count towards the Icers win-loss record, technically giving them no losses at this point in the season.

HOME ICERS GAME VS MICHIGAN-DEARBORN
November 21, 2003
PSU ICERS 4 M-D 3

University Park, PA- The first period started out slow, with few shots being taken in the first five minutes. Dearborn's Brett Logan changed that, however, at 5:01 when he squeaked a shot into the net off of Icer goalie Scott Blackman's back after it had deflected off of Blackman's facemask and bounced off the boards behind the net. Dearborn's Joel Kuehn added a second goal a little over three minutes later when he picked off a clearing attempt and put the puck over Blackman's left shoulder. The period ended 2-0 as the Icers were unable to crack the Dearborn defense.
The second period started out with much of the same as the Icers tried to apply pressure but goaltender Jason Ryan was there to fend them off. The play throughout the period was evenly balanced and neither team had a lot of great scoring opportunities. The Icers were able to break Ryan, as with 1:49 to go in the period Glenn Zuck tallied a power play goal to get the team and crowd back into a now 2-1 Wolves lead as they headed to the third.
Kevin Jaeger kept the momentum going for the Icers as he came out and scored his 14th of the year to tie the game at 2. With an assist on the goal Glenn Zuck became the 5th Icer ever to score 250 career points, and the last since Alon Eizenman broke the 250 mark in 2001. The Icers weren't finished however as Mike Carrano scored his 5th of the year and 3rd on the power play to give the Icers a 3-2 lead. That wouldn't last however, as after Justin Depretis took a cross checking penalty behind the play, Jeff Bancroft scored his own power play goal to knot the game again, this time at 3. The Icers would have the last hurrah in this one, as off a face-off Brendan Roache was able to slide one underneath the left pad of Jason Ryan to give the Icers a 4-3 lead. Michigan-Dearborn came at the Icers for the last 6:58 of the period, but Icers goaltender Scott Blackman stood tall preserving the Icers 4-3 victory.

PSU ICERS 5 M-D 2

University Park, PA.- The Icers and Michigan-Dearborn came out with their feelers on today as neither team wanted to make a defensive mistake early. However, Jack Weber of the Icers was able to pounce on a rebound given up by Wolves goaltender Eric Pagel. The Icers took the early advantage 1-0. However it didn't take long for the Wolves to counter. With the Icers running around defensively in their own zone Joel Kuehn was able to put the puck into an empty net as Chris Matteo was caught out of position.
In the second period the Icers came out with guns ablaze as they tallied twice in the first 1:25 of the period. Kevin Jaeger scored 10 seconds after a nice pass from behind the net by Glenn Zuck. Justin Depretis scored at the 1:25 mark of the period as he walked in over the blue line and put a wicked wrister of the glove hand of Eric Pagel to give the Icers a 3-1 lead. With momentum in the Icers a favor a long penalty killing shift came back to haunt the Icers as Evan Pawloski sent a pass to Jeff Bancroft who was able to squeeze one through Icer goaltender Chris Matteo to make it a 3-2 Icer lead. With 1:44 left in the period the Icers appeared to have taken a 4-2 lead, however the referee waved the goal off as it had been kicked in by an Icers player. The period ended with the Icers up 3-2.
The Icers came out in the third with the one goal lead and trying to add to it. They were able to do so when Curtiss Patrick netted his third of the season after making a great move around the Wolves goaltender, giving the Icers a 4-2 lead. The Icers then played solid team defense for the rest of the period to hold off the Wolves charge. At the 18:39 mark the Wolves were called off-sides negating a shot that got by Chris Matteo. Jack Weber scored his second of the night into an empty net to cap the scoring at 19:22 to give the Icers a 5-2 victory.

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA.- The Icers (20-1) fell short of a comeback against the Ohio Univesity Bobcats (14-7-1).
First Period-
In a game that had a playoff atmosphere, both temas came out jucied up for the first period. After the first couple of minutes it was obvious it would take some time for the Icers to get their skating legs back after the break. The Bobcats took advantage of an early powerplay and a rebound when Nick Bassarab netted the goal giving the Bobcats an early one nothing lead. Then with only a few minutes to go in the period they struck againt on a 2 on none breakaway. Scott Blackman never had a chance and the Bobcats took a 2-0 lead into the intermission
Second Period-
The second period started out slow until a turnover at the offensive blue line allowed Ohio to score on a nice two on one play giving them a 3-0 lead halfway through the second. Then staring at a 3-0 deficit going into the third the Icers caught lightening in a bottle netting 2 goals within the final 1:36 of the second period. The first came on a great pass from behind the net by Curtiss Patrick to Justin Depretis, which Depretis put near side to beat Brian Gallagher for the power play goal. Just a minute and twenty-one seconds later, Bill Downey scored on a rebound to lift the Icers spirits and leave them only trailing by one 3-2 going into the third
Third Period-
In the third the Icers had their game back as they brought everything they had at the Bobcat defense. However, Brian Gallagher was equal to every shot fired on net. The Icers then were rewarded with their hard work getting a 5 on 3 advantage for 1:53. However, despite having many quality scoring opportunities, Gallagher, and one post, kept the Icers off the board. Ohio then added an empty net goal solidifying their 4-2 victory of the previously undefeated Icers.

HOME ICERS GAME VS URI
January 16, 2004
URI 2 PSU ICERS 7

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - The number one ranked Icers (21-2) came home to the Ice Pavilion looking to bounce back from two tough losses to Ohio. In order to do it they would have to go against the number 2 ranked and previously undefeated University of Rhode Island (23-1-1). The Icers were greeted by a full house of Icer faithful for this enormous game.
First Period-
Icers came out a bit flat to start the game and the Rams took it to the Icers for most of the period. The Icers were unable to get any quality scoring opportunities throughout the period as Rhode Island bogged down the neutral zone. Despite out-shooting their opponent 8-7 in the period Rhode Island was able to get a bounce off Tyler Reinhardt's shoulder to give them the 1-0 lead after the first period of play.
Second Period-
In the second period the Icers got their game going when only 6:49 into the period Mike Carrano made a nice move in front of Rams freshman goaltender Anthony Feyock to tie the game at one and bring the sold-out crowd to its feet. Only a minute and 15 second later Jack Weber netted the go-ahead goal for the Icers who now were starting to show their dominance. Glenn Zuck added his 22nd of the year while Weber added his second of the night to give the Icers a 4-1 lead going into the third period. Not to be overlooked was the stellar play of Scott Blackman early in the period to keep the game a 1-0 score when he made a great poke-check on a 2 on 0 break.
Third Period-
The third period was more of the same for the Icers as they started the scoring in the period when Bill Downey put home a rebound to extend the lead to 5-1. Rhode Island answered back with a goal of their own, but the Icers Kevin Jaeger and Justin Depretis got two back to cap the scoring, solidifying a dominating performance with a 7-2 victory over the previously undefeated Rhode Island Rams.

HOME ICERS GAME VS WEST VIRGINIA
January 17, 2004
WEST VIRGINIA 1 PSU ICERS 5

University Park, Pa - The Icers came out strong and looked to assert their dominance against West Virginia (8-9-1) in the first period. They did just that as only 50 second into the game Mike Carrano was able to deflect a Drew Ward shot in front of Mountaineers goalie Tom O'Connor. That would be the only goal of the period which saw Penn State carry the play and outshoot West Virginia by the count of 19 to 1. However, a stellar goaltending performance by O'Connor kept the game at a 1-0 score.
In the second period the Icers were able to solve O'Connor to the tune of three goals. The first came on a power play as Jack Weber continued his solid weekend performance by finding himself in front of a wide open net for the rebound goal. Kevin Jaeger got himself a one-time goal and Teague Willits-Kelly got his third of the season in the period as well. Icers goaltender Brian Gratz was never really challenged throughout the two periods of play as the Icers led 4-0.
In the third period when the Icers looked like they were going to run away and hide, West Virginia goaltender Tom O'Connor came up with some fantastic "Hasek" like saves to keep his team in the game. After a penalty well after the whistle to the Icers, West Virginia was able to sneak one by Brian Gratz and spoil the shutout bid. Kevin Jaeger capped the scoring with his second of the night. The game was never really in doubt after the second period of play as the Icers went on to win their second straight with the final score Icers 5 Mountaineers 1.

Penn State Icers won the chamionship game 11-1 over Washington & Jefferson.

* In the previous consolation game, Western Michigan 7 (#8) West Chester 3.
University Park, PA- The Icers (24-2-0) continue their dominance over the NLIT by winning their 5th consecutive and 18th since 1982 after defeating Washington and Jefferson by the score of 11-1.
In the first period just as they did last night the Icers came out flying all around the ice. This time it was Kevin Jaeger who scored just 2:32 into the game to give the Icers a 1-0 advantage. Justin Depretis who came back after a back injury tallied his 24th of the game for the 2-0 advantage. The teams would then trade even strength goals. Glenn Zuck and Mike Carrano would score to cap the scoring in the period giving the Icers a 5-1 lead and ending Washington and Jefferson’s goalie Yan Clermont’s night.
In the second the Icers looked to finish off the President’s and Bill Downey took it upon himself to do so. Downey scored his first goal of the night on the power play. Then almost two minutes later got his second short handed on a breakaway feed from Chris Rome. Then to cap off his amazing period he scored his third from behind the net, giving the Icers an 8-1 lead. Justin Depretis and Kevin Jaeger both got their second goal’s of the night to finish off the scoring in the period. After two the Icers led 10-1.
The third period was all academic as both teams came out knowing the outcome of the game. Neither team really mustered much of an offensive threat, though neither team ever gave up. The Icers were able to tally one final goal however as Vince Nardy took a Bill Downey feed for the second short handed goal of the night. The Icers went on to win by the score of 11-1.

PSU ICERS 6 UMD 0

University Park, Pa.- After a 6 hour bus trip the number one ranked Icers (25-2) arrived to take on the seventh ranked Michigan-Dearborn Wolves (15-11-2). In the first the Icers again, just as they were able to do last weekend, jumped out to an early lead. Teague Willits-Kelley was able to get the Icers on the board after goaltender Jason Ryan let up a rebound. Joe Maglaque got his 9th goal of the year after Mike Carrano was able to push the puck out to the point after a scramble in front. Bill Downey finished the scoring in the period as he slid a rebound past Ryan. Downey was able to get the backhand shot off despite having a defensemen draped all over him. Scott Blackman was not tested much in the first period as the Icers played great defense. The Icers led 3-0 after one.
In the second both teams were trying not to make any mistakes. They were able to do so staying out of the penalty box, and only having one goal allowed in the period. However, that one goal was for the Icers. After a face off win by Bill Downey, Brendan Martin put a shot on net that came right out to a waiting Curtiss Patrick who blasted a one-timer past a sliding Jason Ryan. The Icers led after 2 by the score of 4-0.
The third period was marked by penalties as both teams started to get a bit aggravated. Despite the march to the box Scott Blackman came up enormous in the third period turning away numerous scoring opportunities for the Wolves. The Icers tacked on two more goals in the period as Garrett Divins and Brendan Martin each added a goal. The Icers behind a great defensive effort and stellar goaltender play earned a 6-0 shutout victory over Michigan-Dearborn Wolves.

AWAY GAME AT UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN DEARBORN
January 31, 2004
PSU ICERS 8 UMD 1

With coach Joe Battista looking for career win 450 the Icers (26-2-0) came out and again got an early jump and the first goal against Michigan-Dearborn (15-12-2). After a Curtiss Patrick penalty put the Icers down a man, Glenn Zuck and Kevin Jaeger were able to connect for the shorthanded goal only 3:15 into the game. However only 4 minutes later Brad Zarem got credit for Dearborn's goal after Chris Matteo had trouble handling a wrist shot from the high slot. It was the only mistake he would make all game. Glenn Zuck would put the Icers back on front after executing a perfect give and go with Curtiss Patrick. The Icers headed into the second leading 2-1.
Both teams played solid defense for the first half of the second period. Then the Icers were able to open the flood gates on goalie Eric Pagel. First Brendan Roache scored a power play goal to give the Icers a 3-1 lead. Only 33 seconds later Justin Depretis hammered home his own rebound to extend the lead to 4-1. To cap off the flurry of goals and end Pagel's day, Teague Willits-Kelley fed Brett Wilson on a beautiful behind the back pass from behind the net giving the Icers a 5-1 lead. Chris Matteo came up with huge saves during the period, especially on a break away after a Dearborn penalty expired. The Icers went into the third period with a commanding 5-1 lead.
After roughly a half hour delay to change a broken pane of glass, both teams came out for the third period. Kevin Jaeger added his second goal of the game after a great feed from Mike Carrano along the left wing. Brett Wilson added his second goal of the game on the power play to make the final score 8-1 in favor of the Icers. Coach Joe Battista won his 450th career game with the victory.

University Park, Pa. –
The Icers (28-2) as they have in the past 2 weekends were able to jump out to another early lead over Delaware (11-15-2). Brendan Roache was able to take a Joe Maglaque feed and beat Mike Verdi for the one nothing lead. Kevin Jaeger added a short handed backhand goal and Glenn Zuck added a power play goal as the specialty teams continued to click. Delaware had a chance for a goal but the puck went sliding through the crease before Scott Blackman was able to get a handle on it. The Icers led 3-0 after the first period of play.
Glenn Zuck tallied his second goal of the game at the 4:39 mark of the second period to give the Icers a 4-0 advantage. At that point each team buckled down and allowed no goals for the next 10 minutes. At the 14:43 mark of the period Pat Schaeffer started the goal scoring extravaganza that would ensue in the last 5 plus minutes. Justin Depretis then was able to beat Verdi with a blast after a Bill Downey feed at the 16:43 mark. At 18:28 Delaware scored their only goal on the weekend after they were finally able to whack a third rebound past a prone Blackman to stop his shutout streak of just over 180 minutes. Depretis then added his second goal of the night at 19:48 on the power play to give the Ices a commanding 7-1 lead after 2.
In the third the Icers came out flying again to start the third as Brett Wilson got a power play goal only 1:23 into the period. HOME GAME VERSUS ROBERT MORRIS
February 13, 2004
PSU ICERS 5 ROBERT MORRIS 0

University Park, Pa. – The Icers (29-2) continued their early jumps on teams again tonight when Brendan Roache took a slap shot from just outside of the Robert Morris (17-19-3) zone. Roache used the Robert Morris defenseman as a screen an Aaron Merkle never saw it. The Icers had a 1-0 lead just 2:05 into the game. Both teams then settled down into their defensive systems, as neither team could muster a quality scoring opportunity the rest of the period.
In the second period both teams continued the physical play that was exhibited in the first period. At the 7:32 mark of the period Pat Schaeffer one timed a behind the back pass from Vince Nardy to give the Icers a 2-0 lead. Merkle stayed focused however and repeatedly robbed Icers forwards of sure goals. At the end of two periods the Icers led by the score of 2—0
In the third period, Robert Morris came out with a little extra jump in their step trying to get an early goal to cut the deficit in half. The Icers, backed by Scott Blackman, however, were able to shut down any and all attempts made towards their goal. Robert Morris took a few too many penalties in the third period which allowed the Icers power play, which was operating around 38 percent, to finally cash in and ice the game. After Curtiss Patrick’s even strength goal at the 14:01 mark, Glenn Zuck and Bill Downey finished off the Eagles with 2 power play goals. The Icers go on to win and give Scott Blackman his 4th shutout of the year by the score of 5-0.

Towson 1 vs. Penn State 10
The Number One ranked Icers (33-2) were looking to make a statement early on in the tournament against Number 12 ranked Towson Tigers (21-16-1).
The Icers made their statement early on in the game as it only took a shot off the stick of Co-captain Bill Downey just 1:18 into the game. Downey fired a shot from the point on the power play and the Icers jumped out to a 1-0 lead. The Icers continued to fire pucks at Towson goaltender Kevin Birnstill but he held strong facing 28 shots, allowing no more goals in the period. At the other end of the Ice, Penn State freshman goaltender Chris Matteo was also strong in net and held Towson to no goals as the Icers headed into the locker room with the 1-0 advantage.
In the second period the Icers started to run around a bit, giving Towson a few good opportunities, Matteo was there to make all the stops in the period. Towson's goaltender Birnstill was not to be outdone as he held the Icers scoreless through MOST of the second period, then with 2:35 to go the flood gates opened. It started with a goal by Glenn Zuck who walked it out from the corner and after making a move around a defenseman Birnstill was out of position and Zuck put the puck into a wide open net. Just 1:33 later Justin Depretis got his first goal of this year's tournament as he was able to finish into an open net after a Glenn Zuck faked shot. Bill Downey netted his second of the night when he took a feed from Curtiss Patrick down the right wing and beat Birnstill near side. The score after two periods was Icers 4 Towson 0.
The third period started out the same as the second ended, with the Icers getting 3 goals in a hurry. Brett Wilson got the first goal a minute in after a Teague-Willits Kelley shot left a rebound in front. Greg Windsor get his after firing a shot high over the blocker of Birnstill after receiving a drop pass just inside the Towson blue line, and Glenn Zuck capped the 3 goals in 3:04 after he got a nice pass from Justin Depretis. The Icers were able to score 6 goals in a 5:39 time span over 2 periods of play and broke out to a 7-0 lead. Towson was able to break the shutout as Joe Narcise was able to get one past Matteo. For good measure the Icers finished off Towson with 3 more goals from Chris Rome, Joe Maglaque, and Teague-Willits Kelley to win by the final of 10-1.
With 33 wins the Icers have tied their all-time high in season wins with this game.

ACHA DIVISION I NATIONAL TOURNAMENT
March 5, 2004
Iowa State 1 PSU Icers 10

The number one ranked Icers (34-2) made it look easy as they defeated the host and number 8 ranked Iowa State Cyclones (25-19-2).
The game started off with the Icers bringing pressure on goaltender Trent Baker. At the 6 minute mark of the period the rink lost power and the teams had to stay loose for about 15 minutes. Once the lights came on Penn State kicked their game into high gear. After Curtiss Patrick took a high sticking call at the 9:07 mark of the first period, Kevin Jaeger and Glenn Zuck took it upon themselves to take the standing room crowd out of the game. They did just that when they scored 2 shorthanded goals in a span of 28 seconds. Kevin Jaeger got his goal on a breakaway move around Baker, while Zuck got his goal after Jaeger beat a charging Baker to the loose puck and all Zuck had to do was get it past a defenseman. The Icers would add power play goals from Brendan Roache and Mike Carrano to go to the locker room up 4-0.
Everything was looking good for the Icers until Mike Moren scored just 38 seconds into the period to cut the lead to 4-1. That would be the closest they would get as the Icers continued to fire shots at now Cyclone goaltender Nolan Thompson. Glenn Zuck and Kevin Jaeger would each add their own power play goal while Chris Rome and Justin Depretis would add their own names to the score sheet with even strength goals. The Icers behind stellar offensive and defensive play would lead 8-1 after the second period.
In the third the Icers would add goals by Mike Carrano and Brendan Roache, each their second, and finish the game with their second 10-1 victory in the tournament.
